Yet there is little understanding of how this came about. Are people aware that there were earlier periods of gender flexibility and contestability in American history?
Trans America: A Counter-History
Feminizing Hormone Therapy | Nebraska Medicine Omaha, NE
Two years ago at Burning Man, Andrea tripped on ayahuasca and had visions of herself as a woman in a past life. At the time, Andrea, a year-old transgender woman, identified as a man, but she had struggled with gender dysphoria since high school. After meeting a few transgender women at the famed music and arts festival, Andrea decided to pursue her own transition. But when she sought out feminizing hormones through clinics around her home in Philadelphia, she ran into lengthy waiting lists and high costs. So she decided to experiment on her own. She ordered Estradiol, a commonly prescribed form of estrogen, and Spironolactone, a testosterone blocker traditionally prescribed to transgender women, from an online pharmacy without a prescription.
Sketchy Pharmacies Are Selling Hormones to Transgender People
The goals of feminizing hormone therapy are to raise the estrogen level and to lower the testosterone level so that both levels are in the normal, physiologic female range. There are three different kinds of medications that are typically used: estrogen, testosterone blockers, and progesterone. Estrogen is the hormone responsible for most feminine characteristics. It can be given as an oral pill, a patch on the skin, or an injection. Antiandrogens or testosterone blockers, are medications that reduce the testosterone level.
Within a relatively short period in US history, transsexuality, a category that had once not existed, became a widely recognized term. The national picture changed from one of no significant institutional support for transsexual therapy and surgery in to a situation in where about twenty major medical centers were offering treatment and some thousand transsexuals had been provided with surgery. Historians of transsexuality have been somewhat dazzled by this demonstration of the making of sex.
